Raymer, Colorado
The New Raymer Post Office
Raymer is in a funny situation: the official name of the incorporated town is "Raymer." However, the US Postal Service has officially designated the site "New Raymer." The townsite was originally surveyed and platted by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1888 and named for George Raymer, an assistant chief engineer for the railroad. The Raymer Post Office opened for business that June. The town flourished for a while, then the weather settled back into its typical drought and families moved away. The Post Office closed on May 14, 1895. Then the town was replatted in 1909 and a new Post Office (sporting the name "New Raymer") opened that November. The town grew enough to be reincorporated under the original name of "Raymer." So today, the state calls the location Raymer but should you address the mail to anything but New Raymer, it won't be delivered. Both names appear on maps...
