Saguache County is located in the northern half of the San Luis Valley in south central Colorado. A lot of the early European settlers were Civil War veterans. They came to Saguache County to take advantage of the "40 acres and a mule" given them by the Federal Government in return for their service in the Union Army (most of them had been recruited in Europe specifically to fight in the war, the land and the mule were part of the "incentive package" they had been offered). The county name is from a word meaning "blue earth" or "water at blue earth" in the Ute language.
Saguache County contains 3,168 square miles of land and 2 square miles of water. The largest town is Center, the county seat is Saguache.
