Rickwood Caverns State Park
Down in Rickwood Caverns
Rickwood Caverns State Park offers more than a mile of beautiful underground caverns to explore. The cave was water-formed over 260 million years ago during the Mississippian period. The blind cave fish in the pools and streams have evolved since then while the limestone formations are still growing. During a tour of the cave you will see that the area was originally a sea bed as there are still fragments of seashells and fossils of various ocean-going marine lifeforms adorning the walls and cavern ceilings.
Above-ground, Rickwood Caverns State Park offers a picnic area with large and small shelters, hiking trails, a playground, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a modern campground and a gift shop.
Cave tours are offered on different schedules, varying with the seasons and park traffic. The cave is open from 10 am to 5 pm daily.
The campground offers 13 developed sites, nine of which are landscaped to accommodate both large and small RVs and trailers. Sites offer electric and water. Restrooms and seasonal showers (open March to October) are nearby. The park also has an RV dump station on site. Rickwood Caverns State Park also offers a "camping and cave tour" package if you ask at time of registration.
Rickwood Caverns was a privately-owned attraction until it was acquired by the State of Alabama in the late 1970's.
