The New River Gorge National River is one of only 15 so-designated rivers in the United States. The National Scenic River and Wild & Scenic River designations are different, somehow. In this case the dichotomy disappeared when the property became the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in February 2021.
The Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network is a network of National Park Service sites spread across all the states with tributary streams that feed into Chesapeake Bay.
Harpers Ferry played a large role before and during the Civil War, and the National Historic Park there has preserved a lot of the old buildings that figure highly in that story.
