Winchester Lake State Park
Winchester Lake State Park is comprised of 418 acres surrounding a 103-acre lake. This is in a forested area just off US 95 at the foot of the Craig Mountains near the town of Winchester. The forest is mostly Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine, which means lots of white-tailed deer, elk and black bear. Add in the lake and you'll get Canada geese, muskrats, osprey, beaver, stellar's jays and Columbian ground squirrels. About a mile from the entrance to Winchester Lake is the Wolf Education and Research Center.
Winchester Lake State Park offers 69 campsites and 4 yurts. Some of the campsites and all of the yurts are available year-round. There are also picnic areas and hiking, biking and cross-country skiing trails. Canoeing and fishing are popular in the summer with ice skating and ice fishing taking over in the winter. Small boats are allowed on the lake but no gasoline motors. The lake is stocked regularly and carries good populations of rainbow trout, bullhead and smallmouth bass. Pets are welcome, as long as they are leashed and attended at all times.
