Idaho has several National Wildlife Refuges and one Waterfowl Production Area. These are usually large areas of open water, marsh, swamp, wetlands, riparian corridors and some associated drier uplands.

While all of the Refuge Areas seem to have been established primarily to protect migrating waterfowl and other bird species, they also provide much-needed undisturbed habitat for mammals like mule deer, pronghorns, elk, black bear, moose, beaver, river otter, weasel, badger, porcupine, coyote and red fox.
