Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness
In Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness
Fish Creek Mountains Wilderness is a 21,388-acre property entirely in Imperial County. The directions to get there say to go via State Highway 78. About 3 miles from the San Diego-Imperial County line turn right and go south on Split Mountain Road to where it intersects with the Gypsum Mine Rail Road. Follow that south. The wilderness is west of the railroad and across the wash. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is to the west.
The Fish Creek Mountains are a sharp, rugged landform with deep, pristine canyons. Canyons deep and steep enough to hide pools of rainwater in their bottoms. A surprising population of wildlife is supported by those pools of water.
