Kisatchie Hills Wilderness

Kisatchie Hills Wilderness is an 8,679-acre property centered around the Bayou Cypre on Kisatchie National Forest. This is a part of Louisiana with unusually steep and rugged terrain, sandstone bluffs and outcroppings, flat-topped mesas and distinct forest ecosystems. There are ten miles of developed trails in the wilderness, the Backbone Trail being the primary as it gives access to three other trails deeper into the woods. The Backbone Trailhead is also the Caroline Dormon Trailhead and offers a parking area, trash receptacles, rest rooms and an information bulletin board.

The Longleaf Vista Recreation Area offers easy access to the wilderness and great overviews of the wilderness as the vista is surrounded on three sides by the wilderness. Access to Longleaf Vista is via the Longleaf Scenic Byway, which runs adjacent to the wilderness area. A large piece of Kisatchie Hills Wilderness is contained within the bounds of the Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve.
