Fremont County spans the Arkansas River Valley between the Front Range (Pikes Peak region), the Wet Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo's. In the county are most of Colorado's State Prisons and the famous Royal Gorge. Just south of Florence is the Federal SuperMax Prison.
Fremont County was named in honor of John C. Fremont, explorer and presidential candidate. Fremont County contains 1,533 square miles of land and 1 square mile of water. The county seat is Canon City.
